Trick or Treat

We put together some safety tips for trick or treating during the pandemic and many of them may not apply anymore, but others are good general advice on staying safe at Halloween.

Tips for trick or treaters (and their parents):

  • Stay home if you’re not feeling well! Whether it’s COVID-19 or the flu, that’s the wrong kind of trick to share.
  • Only visit houses with outdoor lights on or decorations visible.
  • Wait your turn and don’t crowd.
  • Watch out for smaller kids who might be overwhelmed by crowds and costumes.
  • Don’t accept any unwrapped sweets (even before coronavirus that wasn’t a good idea) and don’t eat anything homemade unless it’s from someone you know.
  • Carry hand sanitiser and use it regularly, or wait until you get home and wash your hands before you eat any sweets.

Tips for residents sharing sweets:

  • Don’t hand out sweets if you or anyone in your household has COVID or anything else contagious.
  • Leave your porch light on and put up decorations so kids know where to stop.
  • Only offer individually wrapped treats, never unwrapped sweets — and save the homemade treats for close neighbours and friends.
  • Don’t leave treats in a bowl for kids to dig through and share their germs — drop them into treat bags yourself.
  • Or hand out treats from a distance! Over the last couple years people have made creative treat chutes out of thing like packing tubes.
